My name is Maria, and I’m 50 years old. My passion for the health and fitness industry began about 30 years ago. I played different sports as a child, and as a teen. But once I graduated high school, I stopped participating in sports. This led to me losing my athletic build, and I started getting chubby. I was miserable in my own body.
A friend of mine introduced me to group fitness, in 1990, and I fell in love with it. I was losing weight, and having fun doing it. I loved it so much that I got certified as a group fitness instructor and began teaching a variety of classes. Everything from regular floor aerobics to boxing aerobics, step, body sculpting and more. I was able to stay in shape while earning an income.
In 2006, I began working as an in-home personal trainer, creating exercise programs for private clients, in their homes. I continued teaching classes as well. I wasn’t certified, but I knew how to coach others into getting fit and healthy. I was certified in group fitness and sports nutrition.
In 2016, I moved to another town with my fiancé (now my husband). He had to move in order to advance his career. I continued to exercise regularly, but I was no longer teaching members or training clients. Instead, I was helping my husband build his career/business.
My passion for helping people reach their health and fitness goals has been burning continuously since 2016. And now I am in a position to start teaching classes and training again. In order to be able to provide my clients and group fitness members with optimal services, I will obtain specific certifications. This way I will have all the knowledge and skills to help individuals reach their health and fitness goals.
I am currently enrolled in the National Academy of Sports Medicine’s (NASM) Elite Trainer program. Upon successful completion I will have the following certifications,
- Certified Personal Trainer
- Certified Nutrition Coach
- Performance Enhancement Specialist
- Certified Group Fitness Instructor
- Corrective Exercise Specialist
- Behavior Change Specialist
It will take me anywhere from 3 months to 1 year to complete all 6 courses. I don’t anticipate it taking too long. In the meantime…
How I Can Help People
I aim to provide my website visitors with information related to health, fitness and nutrition. As I learn new information from the courses I am taking, and the research I’m doing, I will share it on this website. I want to give my readers the foundational information they need in order to take positive steps toward becoming fit and healthy.
Through the information I provide here, people can gain an understanding of how regular exercise and healthy food choices will improve their quality of life. Exercise is the best way to prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, type II diabetes, and some cancers.
Although I know what it takes for me to remain fit and healthy, I have only been working out regularly now for the past 6 months. I suffered a knee injury in 2018, and I didn’t get back on track once I healed. As a matter of fact, I lived a pretty sedentary lifestyle from 2018 until the end of January, 2022.
My athletic physique was gone and I was 20 lbs overweight by the time I started working out and eating healthy again. I wanted to start sooner than I did and have no excuse for why it took me so long.
I kept telling myself that I would start on Monday. Lots of Mondays came and went, and I remained overweight, weak, and lazy. My thighs were rubbing together when I walked. The longer I procrastinated, the harder it was to get started.
There were a few times, during the 3 1/2 years, when I worked out for a few days or even for a week, but I wasn’t consistent. I knew that I wasn’t going to feel better until I made a full commitment to myself to get back in shape. I no longer had a gym membership, so I purchased a treadmill, some hand weights, an aerobic step, a mini trampoline, some resistance bands, and a stability ball. Just buying these items motivated me to get started and to be consistent. I cleared out a space in my office for everything, created an exercise and nutrition plan, and began.
So, hey, I know how hard it can be to get started. I know what it feels like to be miserable in my own body. And I know how challenging it can be to make healthy food choices. Especially when it is so convenient to just grab some pre-packaged food to eat. I have a sweet tooth.
I don’t deprive myself of the foods I love. And you don’t have to either. There is a way to eat all the foods we love while still getting adequate nutrition, and while still losing weight.
After consistently working out 5-6 days a week, for about 6 weeks, I started looking forward to my workouts. I have some fitness goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time sensitive. For example, I want to be able to do 10 tabata cycles in a row without stopping, by July 15, 2022. I can do 8 tabata cycles right now.
Once I successfully complete the Personal Training course, and earn my certification, I will be available as an online personal trainer. So, stay tuned. Personal training services are soon to come.
The Goal of My Website
The goal of my website is to help people get fit and healthy.
In all my years of working out, I have always opted for fun ways to exercise. Music helps to motivate me and to get me through the harder exercises. Plus, I do aerobics 3-5 times a week. Aerobics is similar to dancing because you move to the beat of the music, which is fun to me.
www.Fitness4optimalhealth.com is the place you can visit for information and motivation along your journey to get and stay healthy. Upon successful completion of the certifications I am studying for, I will be offering coaching services. Until then, follow me for informational content and updates on my progress towards becoming qualified to create exercise and nutrition programs. I look forward to helping you get fit and healthy.
